Here is an excerpt from Images of America: Harrodsburg:
“Harrodsburg is the oldest permanent settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains and was founded in 1774 by James Harrod. Images of America: Harrodsburg covers the city limits from the late 1770s to the early 1960s and provides over 220 images from the Armstrong Collection, the Harrodsburg Historical Society, the Mercer County Public Library and the Kentucky Historical Society. Within these pages, experience and explore Harrodsburg during the pivotal era at the beginning of the great commonwealth – from the settlement of Old Fort Harrod to the “Saratoga of the West” mineral springs and spas. Follow the growth, hard times, and recovery of Harrodsburg, including government and growing businesses, advancements in education, the rise of religious institutions, and local and visiting celebrities. These well-preserved photographs from the entrepreneurs, grand openings, and expert news reporting all the reader to step back in time.”

Sorry for the shameless promotion, but this is a wonderful book about Harrodsburg - the oldest permanent settlement in Kentucky. Please try to buy a copy! This will also be great for tourist who will be visiting our area on vacations.

Sunday Scribblings 141 - I Knew Instantly ...

Sunday Scribblings #141 - "I knew instantly..."

This prompt is inspired by some of you! Often in your comments you will say, "I knew instantly what I was going to write about." So now you have to write about that.

Finish this sentence and then keep on going: "I knew instantly..."

What in your life did you just KNOW?

I knew instantly it would be a disaster as soon as my daughter said it was happening. For eighteen months now, the school district has been working on a new 25 million dollar high school. Parents were told that the transition to the new school would be quick and painless - famous last words ...

The plan was to move into the new school while the kids were on fall break (the first two weeks in October), but, of course, the building wasn't completed. The next date for moving was two weeks before Thanksgiving break. Of course, this didn't happen either.

When my daughter said the scheduled date for moving was to be December 12th - today, this Friday - I was skeptical. My daughter was furious! Here they were in the middle of finals week for the end of the semester, and the kids were having to be orientated to a new school.

So, now they will have one week to get used to a brand-new school building, before being out of school for the two week Christmas holiday. Then the chaos of the first week will bleed into another chaos filled week, as the children will have forgotten were everything is and have to start all over again.

Oh, and did I mention the facts about the new school library? We were guaranteed the new school library would be twice as big as the current library. Reading parents of children who read were all ecstatic - more library room meant more books and research material. But alas, every time adjustments were made to the blueprint, the library would get smaller and smaller.

The new library has ended up the same size as the original library with no room for new books or the research material we were hoping for. But, by God, we have a world-class gymn for basketball games! Nice to know the school has their priorities straight.
