Sugarcult - Christine

CHRISTINE
by Sugarcult

what's wrong?
i feel so alone again.
the look in your eyes sometimes...
pretending that it's all right.
make up and move on,
our ways never change
and i can get anyone that i want -
you'll see christine.
and i would do anything if you could believe in me,
but girl-you play those tricks
and make a fool out of me.
that's the way it goes here.
i can't stand loving you anymore.
i try my best, but i'm back for more.
my heart beat stops every time you leave me.
hanging on lately...
last night,
she came back into my life.
to play with my head this time.
she's hanging me out for dead
i take it and move on,
our ways will never change
and i can get anyone that i want -
you'll see christine.
and i would do anything if you could believe in me.
but girl, you play those tricks
and make a fool out of me.
that's the way it goes here.
i can't stand loving you anymore.
i try my best, but i'm back for more.
my heart beat stops every time you leave me.
hanging on lately...
take her away, take her away, take her away from this place.
take her away, take her away, take her away from this place.
what's wrong?
i feel so alone again.
i flunked out a thousand times,
it's making me realize,
that i'm back and better for us.
our ways will never change
and i can get anyone that i want -
you'll see christine.
and i would do anything if you could believe in me.
but girl, you play those tricks
and make a fool out of me.
you'll see, christine.

To College or War

TO COLLEGE OR WAR

My daughter is off to college today,
it's almost like going to war.
Trunks are filled, bags are packed,
the house is feeling smaller already.
I think this is a good thing,
even a great thing,
but the thought of my baby being gone
is a bitter pill to swallow.
Posters off the wall, books carefully packed away,
Disney characters stare back at me,
wondering where their owner has gone.
Harrodsburg, Danville and into the heart of Lancaster.
Thistles, Joe Pye Weed, Crepe Myrtle, Ironweed and Goldenrod,
bloom along the way.
A cliff lined with limestone,
blasted away to make room for these asphalt roads.
Paint Lick Elementary School in Cartersville -
Highway 954.
Yellow tobacco waiting to be cut,
and creek beds drying with rocks peeking up their heads on each side.
Cattails sway in the breeze as we follow a truck containing
a Crucifixion cross like a scene from "Mad Max."
Madison County, East 21,
Berea,
my God, we're almost there.
Blondies's Ice Cream Parlor and the Circle K,
and our honeymoon spot - the Holiday Motel.
Berea College approaches,
the time is finally here.
I know it is not a good-bye,
just an, "I'll see you later,"
but why does it feel like forever?

One-Minute Writer - Proud

Today's One-Minute Writing Prompt: Proud

What has been the proudest moment of your life thus far? Describe the moment in vivid detail.

Because my children are my greatest source of pride and I have had so many proud moments, I decided to detail my most recent proud moment.

My youngest daughter, Christine, is 16 years old and a junior in high school - she is also an honor student. During late fall of 2008, she applied to attend the Kentucky Governor's School of the Arts for the summer creative writing program. This program is extremely difficult to get into because they only take 200 students each year - and this year there were over 1800 KY students applying.

In December, Christine finished up the long application process and put the finishing touches on the 8 page manuscript she had to submit. The entire packet was in the mail just before Christmas and we started the long wait. First notifications were to be sent out on February 15th.

Then along came the ice storm of 2009 and all mail delivery was a tad slow. It was excruciating waiting to see if she would be chosen to go on to the next level in the application process. Finally, the letter came - she had passed the first hurdle! Now she was scheduled for the group interview and reading process of the application.

We traveled to Transylvania University in Lexington the 2nd weekend in March. Christine was in a group of 6 other students being interviewed - all in one big group - by 2 of the GSA teachers. Parents weren't allowed in, but Christine felt like she did fairly well. Another hurdle leaped.

Then we began the wait - again. We had been told by past participants in the GSA program to watch for a large envelope in the mail - large meant she was accepted, small meant she wasn't. We were supposed to hear on tax day, April 15th. We didn't hear until 2 days later.

When I went to the mailbox on April 17th, I nearly collapsed right on the road - there was a LARGE envelope addressed to Christine. Tears in my eyes and shaking from relief, I rushed into the house and debated only 2 seconds before ripping into the envelope.

YES - my baby had been accepted into one of the most prestigious creative writing programs in the country!! Knowing I couldn't wait until she got home from school, I called the school and asked to speak to my daughter - thank goodness I know the school receptionist. When Christine got on the phone I told her congratulations and the next thing I knew, she was crying. My big, brave girl who never cries was absolutely sobbing!

So, I got in the car and drove to school to check her out. By the time I got there, she had a huge smile on her face and had already told most of her teachers and friends. I have never seen her so happy!!

Out of over 1800 applicants, my daughter is one of only 200 Kentucky students to be attending the 3 week creative writing school this summer. She leaves the day after my oldest daughter's wedding, so the week of June 20th is going to be busy.

Tomorrow, Christine will be honored in front of the Mercer County School Board and next week there will be a write-up in our local paper, The Harrodsburg Herald. My hubby and I are beyond proud of our youngest daughter.

WONDERFUL NEWS

I have such WONDERFUL NEWS !!! My sweet baby received her acceptance letter today from the Governor's School of the Arts !!!

HAPPY DANCE, HAPPY DANCE !!!

Out of over 1,600 applicants from Kentucky students, she was one of 200 to be accepted into the summer Creative Writing Program.

She will be leaving the day after my oldest daughter's wedding, June 21st and will spend 3 weeks at Transy.

To say her Daddy and I are proud is a total understatement. This is something our entire family has been praying about since just before Christmas. To finally have the acceptance letter in hand is pure excitement.

Symbol of Death

The following poem was written by my 16 year old daughter. It was an assignment for our writing class and I felt it needed to be shared.

SYMBOL OF DEATH

By Christine Rightmyer
4.13.09

As my head slipped underwater,
All I could see were the lilies.
They call them the symbol of death…
Wouldn’t you agree?

The symbol of everything I wanted.
Wanting to slip away and never come back
The water closed in around me.
Wrapping its cool fingers over my body…

That was all I wanted, except…
You pulled me up before my time was gone.
Your fingers gripped my shoulders, eyes bearing into me.
The lilies were now gone, but you were here to stay.

Governor's School for the Arts

I have to take a moment and brag about my youngest daughter, Christine. Back in December, she applied for the creative writing program for the Governor's School for the Arts. There was a lengthy application and she had to submit a manuscript of 8 pages or less - preferably a short story she had written.

Last week she was very upset because she had not heard from the school - announcements were supposed to go out January 26th, but we all know what happened last week. I tried to explain that the roads were ice covered and even if someone could get into the office, there may not be any electricity.

Well, I got home from work yesterday and Christine was walking on cloud nine!! She had finally received her answer - in the form of another packet of papers to be filled out. She made it past the first hurdle!! Now she needs to get a teacher (she has chosen her writing teacher) and a guidance counselor to filled out evaluations of her ability and then she will go through an interview and reading the first weekend in March.

Congratulations, Christine! This is something you have worked hard for and your daddy and I are very proud!!

Watch out Transylvania - here she comes!!
